GOOGLE. The first thing that will start ticking our mind would of course be the search engine. After all, who doesn't know Google rite? Google has by far provided us with various programs such as Google Calendar, Google MAPS, Google Earth, and many more. This shows that Google has created a deep impact into our life.
According to Carr(2006), Google's IT and EC management strategy is both effective and efficient. Do you know that their annual revenue for 2008 is US$21.80 billion?? Google's goal is to deliver technologies to organize the worlds information and make it universally accesible and useful.
Recently, Google is trying to invent a spreadsheet named Google Spreadsheet that can be shared by 10 user simultaneously to input and share data. This spreadsheet aims to overcome the limitations faced by Microsoft Excel. This spreadsheet is also able to import and export data from Excel's xls. format or the Open Comma Separated Value (.csu) format.
This program functions by saving the spreadsheet data's automatically with each user action over the web onto Google computer servers. Users can actually sort data and use the 200 functions and common formulas for doing basic calculations.
However, this program is still under testing including other programs initiated by Google such as Writely Wors and Google Calendar. Furthermore, Google is currently studying how much demand there is for Google Spreadsheet to work with Google Base, an online database service that allows users to post information online.
Google also has partnered with BearingPoint, an IT consulting firm to supply enterprise search capabilities. What is enterprise search mean?> An enterprise search identifies and enables specific content across the enterprise to be indexed, searched and displayed to authorized users.
For example, Kaiser Permanente (kaiserpermanente.org), America's largest non-profit health maintenance organization (HMO), developed a clinical knowledge corporate portal for its 50,000 doctors, nurses, and other caregivers where enterprise search was part of the plan. This portal gives medical staff access to diagnostic information, publicationsm, educational material and other clinical resources anywhere in the Kaiser wide area network.
Kaiser then turned into Google Search Appliances, which enabled the HMO to index 150,000 documents accross the Kaiser network. Now, doctors and nurses use the search engine to help them reach diagnoses and specify treatments, check the side effect of the new medications, and consult clinical research studies and other medical publications.
In conclusion, Google's performance has become an envy among the engineers and executives around the world. It has influenced the life of many people and also the corporate world dramatically. Undoubtly, Google is leading new paradigm in the way we communicate in the world.
